Chairman Mao is not amused

© Heike Schmidbauer

I recently stumbled upon this historical photograph from the year 1953 in the famous He Xiangning Art Museum (He Xiangning Meishuguan) in Shenzhen. Named after the well-known political activist and gifted painter and calligrapher He Xiangning (ca. 1878-1972), the museum is highly acclaimed as an important showroom for the contemporary Chinese art scene.

Standing before the photo above, I had a hard time trying to suppress an unintentional and loud giggle.

To me, the Great Helmsman seemed less than amused. Do you notice the slight air of disgust on his face? Thinking, maybe: 'Who the hell is this? Somebody, please, please, shut up the old chatterbox! Can't stand it any more! Ugh, now she is even touching me!'

What do you think?
